Rwanda sells out its gorilla permits months in advance more often than Uganda does, and it comes down to simple math: more habituated families spread across more trailheads.
If your travel dates are only a few weeks out, or you just want more room to choose your sector, here is how Uganda's permit system actually works.
Uganda has more than 20 habituated gorilla families across two parks, Bwindi and Mgahinga, compared to Rwanda's 12 in a single park. That means more permits released per day, and more flexibility if your dates are close.
- Four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, each with its own habituated families and trailhead.
- A fifth option: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, with its own smaller habituated group.
- Roughly 160 daily permits across Uganda, versus roughly 96 in Rwanda.
- Booking lead time: four to eight weeks is often enough, though earlier is always safer.
- More sectors means more chance of a permit on the specific dates you want.

1. Four Sectors, Not One Trailhead
Bwindi is not a single trailhead. Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo each have their own park headquarters, their own habituated families, and their own access roads. If one sector is full on your dates, another often is not.

A habituated gorilla family has been slowly, carefully accustomed to human presence over years, to the point where a strictly limited number of visitors can observe them at close range without disturbing their natural behaviour. Every family trekked commercially has been through this process.
Habituation is a slow, careful process, built to protect the gorillas' natural behaviour, not just to allow closer photos.
3. How Many Permits Are Issued Each Day
With more than 20 habituated families across Uganda's sectors, at eight permits per family per day, the total daily permit pool runs well over 160. Rwanda's single park issues roughly 96 permits a day across its 12 families.
4. Booking Close To Your Travel Dates
Because the pool is larger, Uganda permits can sometimes be secured with four to eight weeks' notice, even in shoulder season. Rwanda, especially June through September and December through February, is worth booking three to six months out.

We simply check the next sector. Buhoma is the most established and easiest to reach; Ruhija and Nkuringo are quieter and higher altitude; Rushaga has the most families in a single sector. All four lead to the same hour with a gorilla family.
6. Peak Season Still Sells Out
More permits does not mean unlimited permits. June to September and December to February remain Uganda's busiest months too, and popular sectors like Buhoma can still fill up close to those dates.
7. Our Advice On Timing
Book as early as you can regardless of country, but if your dates are inside the next two months, Uganda's larger permit pool genuinely gives you a better chance of finding availability that fits.
More Room To Move, Not A Lesser Experience
Uganda's spread across four sectors and a second park is a structural advantage for anyone booking with less lead time, not a compromise on the trek itself. Every habituated family, in either country, delivers the same strictly managed hour that makes this trip worth doing.

Start PlanningFrequently Asked Questions
Can I choose which sector I trek in?
Yes, we discuss sector options based on your fitness level, travel dates and where else your itinerary takes you, then book accordingly.
What if I book late and my preferred sector is full?
We check availability across all four Bwindi sectors plus Mgahinga and recommend the closest match to what you wanted.
Do permits get more expensive closer to the date?
No, Uganda Wildlife Authority's permit price is fixed regardless of how close to travel you book, availability is the only variable.
Can a permit be transferred to someone else?
Generally no, permits are booked to a specific traveler's name and passport details and are non-transferable.
Is Mgahinga worth choosing over Bwindi?
Mgahinga has a single, smaller habituated family and sees far fewer visitors. It suits travelers prioritising a quieter experience over Bwindi's wider infrastructure.
