Gorilla Trekking

A forest hike that ends with an hour in the presence of a habituated mountain gorilla family, on foot, in Uganda, Rwanda or DR Congo.

Overview

Gorilla trekking is the single experience most travelers build an entire trip around, and it is the activity we know best. A ranger led group sets out at dawn to find a habituated gorilla family, tracked the previous day by a team of trackers already in the forest.

Once your group finds the gorillas, you are permitted a strictly managed hour in their presence, enough time to watch a troop feed, groom and interact, while keeping disturbance to the endangered species to a minimum.

Why Do This

01

Face to face time with an endangered species found nowhere else on earth

02

A permit system that limits each family to eight visitors a day

03

Ranger led, with trackers already in the forest ahead of your group

04

Combines easily with chimpanzee tracking or a wildlife safari

Gorilla Trekking By Country

Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo all offer mountain gorilla trekking, and each has a genuinely different logistics, price and accommodation profile. Congo's access depends on current conditions, so we plan it only when our on the ground partners confirm it.

Logistics
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is reached by a long, scenic drive from Entebbe or a short charter flight to one of three park airstrips. There are no roads inside the park, so flying in saves a full travel day.
Cost
Permits cost $800 per person for one hour with a habituated family, in a group capped at eight visitors.
Where To Stay
Options range from simple tented camps to Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp and Rushaga Gorilla Lodge, both close to the trailheads.
Our Take
The lower cost and steeper, muddier terrain make Uganda the better fit for travelers prioritising value over polish.
Logistics
Volcanoes National Park sits a two hour drive from Kigali, making it the easiest gorilla trek to combine with a short trip.
Cost
Permits cost $1,500 per person, the most expensive of the three countries, for the same one hour with a habituated family.
Where To Stay
Rwanda has the most polished lodge scene of the three, including Bisate Lodge, Virunga Lodge and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.
Our Take
Worth the premium if smooth logistics and high end accommodation matter more than the trekking terrain itself.

DR Congo

Visit DR Congo
Logistics
Kahuzi-Biega National Park is reached via Goma or Bukavu, both requiring a specialist local partner to arrange safely.
Cost
Permits run lower than Rwanda's, generally around $400 per person, reflecting more limited infrastructure.
Where To Stay
Accommodation is simpler than Uganda or Rwanda, a small number of basic lodges near the park.
Our Take
We only run this itinerary when our on the ground partners confirm current conditions support it.

Wildlife You Might See

Gorilla trekking almost always turns up more than gorillas, especially in the forest surrounding the trailheads.

What To Expect

Treks range from thirty minutes to several hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved. Terrain is steep and often muddy, so a reasonable fitness level and proper boots matter. Porters are available to carry packs and offer a hand on steep sections.

When To Go

Trekking runs year round, but the two dry seasons keep trails firmer underfoot and are when most travelers book.

Gorilla Trekking Frequently Asked Questions

How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?

Treks range from thirty minutes to six hours depending on where the family has moved that morning. Porters are available at every trailhead to carry packs and help on steep sections, so a moderate fitness level is enough as long as you are prepared for a real hike.

Is gorilla trekking safe for older travelers?

Yes, with realistic expectations. We regularly book travelers in their sixties and seventies, and porters make a real difference on steep ground. Let us know your fitness level when booking so we can flag it to the park for trail assignment.

What happens if we do not find the gorillas?

It is rare, trackers are usually in the forest from dawn relaying the family's location by radio, but on the small chance a trek comes up empty, Uganda Wildlife Authority issues a follow up permit at no extra cost.
