Mountain & Volcano Climbing

From an overnight hike to a churning lava lake to a sunrise dune climb, added altitude changes the whole character of a trip.

Overview

Not every high point on our destination list is a mountain in the traditional sense. Namibia's Sossusvlei dunes and DR Congo's Nyiragongo volcano both reward the climb with a view found nowhere else on the continent.

These are optional extensions we build into a wider itinerary, timed so the physical effort does not compete with a gorilla trek or long game drive on the same day.

Mountain & Volcano Climbing By Country

DR Congo and Namibia offer the two most dramatic high points on our list, one a live volcano, the other the world's tallest sand dunes.

DR Congo

Visit DR Congo
Logistics
Nyiragongo's trailhead is a short drive from Goma, with the climb itself run entirely through Virunga National Park's ranger service.
Cost
Permits cost around $300 per person, including the overnight crater rim huts and porter option.
Where To Stay
Basic huts at the crater rim on the mountain itself, then a lodge in Goma before and after the climb.
Our Take
A genuinely demanding overnight hike, but a view of an active lava lake found nowhere else on the continent.
Logistics
Sossusvlei sits inside Namib-Naukluft National Park, reached by a scenic drive or light aircraft from Windhoek.
Cost
Park fees run around $15 per person per day, with no separate climbing permit required.
Where To Stay
Desert lodges just outside the park gate, positioned for an early start before the dunes heat up.
Our Take
A shorter, more accessible climb than Nyiragongo, suited to a wider range of fitness levels.

What To Expect

Nyiragongo is an overnight hike with a night spent at the crater rim in basic huts. Sossusvlei's dunes are a shorter, steep morning climb. Both reward reasonable fitness with a view worth the effort.

When To Go

Both climbs run year round, though Namibia's cooler winter months, May to September, make the dune climb more comfortable.

Mountain & Volcano Climbing Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Nyiragongo climb?

It is a six to seven hour hike, steep in sections, ending with a night at the crater rim in basic huts. It is demanding but doable for a reasonably fit traveler with no prior mountaineering experience, and porters are available for packs.

What is the weather like at the Nyiragongo summit?

Cold, often near freezing overnight even close to the equator, because of the altitude. We provide a full kit list, including warm layers, before you travel.

Is Sossusvlei's dune climb suitable for children?

Yes, it is shorter and more approachable than Nyiragongo, generally forty five minutes to an hour to the top of the highest dunes, though the sand does make it more tiring than the distance alone suggests.
