Uganda and Rwanda only offer mountain gorilla trekking. DR Congo is the only country where you can trek Grauer's gorillas, the world's largest gorilla subspecies, and mountain gorillas within reach of the same base.
The two subspecies are genuinely different animals in genuinely different habitat, and travelers often assume trekking one is just a substitute for the other. It is not.
Grauer's gorillas, also called eastern lowland gorillas, live in Kahuzi-Biega National Park near Bukavu, in dense lowland rainforest. Mountain gorillas live at altitude in Virunga's bamboo forest. Both are trekked through DR Congo, but they are different subspecies in different terrain.
- Grauer's gorillas: the world's largest gorilla subspecies, found only in eastern DR Congo.
- Habitat: dense lowland rainforest around Kahuzi-Biega, versus bamboo forest at altitude for mountain gorillas.
- Permit cost: Grauer's permits run lower than mountain gorilla permits, around $400pp.
- Population: Grauer's gorillas are more critically endangered than mountain gorillas, with a smaller total population.
- Access: both are reached via Kigali, then an overland border crossing into DR Congo.

1. Two Subspecies, One Country
DR Congo has both Grauer's gorillas in its eastern lowlands and mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park in the north. No other country offers both, which is part of why we run a dedicated Congo itinerary rather than treating it as an add-on to Rwanda.
2. What Makes Grauer's Gorillas Different
Grauer's gorillas are the largest living gorillas, adapted to dense, humid lowland rainforest rather than the cooler bamboo forest mountain gorillas prefer. Sightings feel different too, the terrain is flatter but the vegetation is thicker.

Decades of regional instability hit Grauer's gorilla populations harder than mountain gorillas, and their total numbers are now smaller and less studied. Trekking permits directly fund the limited conservation infrastructure that exists.
4. Getting There
Both experiences are reached via Kigali, with an overland border crossing into DR Congo. This itinerary runs entirely through a specialist local partner who handles logistics and safety on the ground.
- This itinerary only runs when our on the ground partners confirm current conditions support it
- Overland transfers replace flights for most of the route
- A valid DR Congo visa is required in advance
5. Should You Choose Congo Over Uganda Or Rwanda
Not as a straight substitute. Choose Congo if trekking the world's largest gorilla subspecies, in genuinely less visited terrain, matters more to you than convenience or infrastructure. Choose Uganda or Rwanda if ease of access and established infrastructure matter more.
A Genuinely Different Trek, Not A Substitute
Grauer's gorillas are not a lesser version of mountain gorilla trekking, they are a different animal in different terrain, and one of the least visited wildlife experiences left on the gorilla trekking circuit.
